Today we officially – and thankfully – farewell summer and welcome the cooler weather with the start of Autumn! March also marks the start of several exciting events in Perth! I’ve always loved Lei Lady Lei’s blog segment “What’s Happening”, a listicle about the key things happening in Perth each month. If you follow Lei Lei’s blog you might have seen that she has sadly moved back to Melbourne, and so with her blessing I’ve decided to continue her segment. So read on for the key things to do in Perth, in March.
The Urban Couture Festival returns in full swing this year with iconic Australian designers Romance Was Born as the official ambassadors. The dynamic program, which brings creatives “to the Northern Corridor of Perth” will include guerilla runway shows, a fashion exhibition, living mural paintings, textile works shops and much more! For the full program see here or read my picks below.
Where: Level Four, City of Joondalup Reid Promenade Multi Storey Car Park, 93 Boas Avenue.
What: The City of Joondalup’s Reid Promenade multi storey car park will be transformed to host a runway show featuring some of Perth’s best emerging and graduate designers including Base by Ben and Elle Campbell. These types of shows are my favourite as a lot of the designers don’t face the same commercial restrictions that established designers do, which means there is always a lot more creativity and innovation!

Fashion ExhibitionWhen: February 20th – March 20th, Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 3pm
Where: 4/48 Central Walk Joondalup City Centre
What: Artists Elle Campbell (pictured above) Anya Brock, Sara Winfield and Rose Church will be exhibiting their artworks as part of this year’s Fashion Exhibition. Most of the artists currently use fashion as a tool to connect with their audiences, I’m particularly excited to see Campbell’s large scale hand painted silk artworks that are an extension of her incredible graduate collection SOLACE – which she will also be showcasing at Emerging and Graduate Capsule Runway.

When: March 10th – Until stocks last
Where: Online here or shop the range in WA stores: Carousel, Innaloo, Joondalup, Perth City and Success.
What: Legendary French Designer Jean Paul Gaultier has teamed up with Target for their latest designer collaboration, making his quirky designs finally attainable for all! In true JPG style there are plenty Breton stripes, tattoo inspired prints and denim! Naturally I am eyeing off the more classic pieces including a tuxedo jacket, a stripe sailor tee and some high waisted front pleat pants. Happy shopping!

Detached Perspective – Anya Brock CapsuleWhen: March 12th – 26th
Where: PS Art Space in Fremantle
What: Iconic for her brightly coloured figurative paintings, Anya Brock will be pursuing new creative styles through Anya Brock Capsule, a series of experimental capsule collections. Detached Perspective is the first of her new body of works and explores expressive abstract mark making. I personally find it so refreshing that an artist is able to explore and experiment with various different techniques and styles, so I am very much looking forward to this exhibition!

Sculpture by the SeaWhen: March 4th – 20th
Where: Cottesloe Beach
What: Cottesloe Bech will once again transform into a sculptural landscape for the annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. Every year I am in absolute awe of the creativity and calibre of work that is exhibited, this year there are 77 artists from 19 countries exhibiting and needless to say it will be a feast for the eyes!

When: Easter Long Weekend, March 24th – 28th
What: This Easter long weekend the streets of Fremantle will be home to performers from around the globe, turning them into stages to amuse, astound and amaze. The program is jam-packed with a variety of shows and performances, so that everyone’s taste is catered for!
