Everlane #DamnGoodDenim
Everlane has been my go-to for quality basics for years now, and needless to say, the permanent shipping to Australia is one of my highlights for 2017 – sad, I know but hear me out! If you’re not familiar with Everlane they are a San Francisco based sustainable and ethical apparel company creating modern essentials, their ethos is simple: exceptional quality, ethical factories, and radical transparency. They operate on the basis that the products they create are not at the cost of the people making them or the environment, yet still maintain a very good sense of fashionability at a very affordable price point.
After launching their first t-shirt seven years ago, it was time they introduced its iconic counterpart: Denim. Whilst I was in New York in September, Everlane launched their #DamnGoodDenim campaign and I was very fortunate to be able to attend the media preview and be one of the first to get my hands on a pair of their jeans. The Everlane Denim range sold out in a matter of hours, so to celebrate their re-stock I thought I would write this article to tell you a bit more about the range, the factory they are made in and of course share my verdict.
MORE ABOUT THE FACTORY:
The denim is produced in Saitex, their “game-changing” denim factory. Unlike typical manufacturers their LEED-certified facility recycles 98% of its water – that’s clean enough to drink, and relies on alternative energy sources, and repurposes byproducts to create premium jeans – minus water waste.
The jeans are air-dried using air recycled from hot factory machinery to reduce electricity.
All denim creates a toxic byproduct called sludge, but at Saitex, the sludge is extracted and shipped to a nearby brick factory. Mixed together with concrete, the toxic material can no longer leech into the environment. The resulting bricks are used to build affordable homes.
I bought the high rise skinny in black regular (pictured) which have fast become a wardrobe favourite, they also have a shorter ankle-grazing cut for those looking for a cropped look or needing a shorter leg. In terms of sizing I am a size 6 AU and for these jeans, I bought the 24. The jeans are cut really well and hug all the right places – think bum lift, however, they are a comfortable and slightly relaxed fit on me which is actually perfect as at the moment I am leaning more towards wearing relaxed fits, if I really wanted a tight/super skinny fit I would have had to go down a size – which they don’t currently offer. All in all, I am super impressed with their denim range and can’t wait to replace my existing denim - when they start failing me as I don't want to contribute to more waste, with their #DamnGoodDenim.
